If you are a first-timer and want a fuller picture of what the experience feels like, difficulty level, and what to expect on the water, read our Ayung rafting guide for first-timers.
Most rafting operators on the Ayung River are located north of central Ubud, in the Payangan area of Gianyar. One option we work with is Surya Bintang Rafting in Melinggih Kelod, Payangan.
Travel time from your hotel varies. From central Ubud the transfer is usually shorter. From Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua it takes longer, and traffic can change the duration significantly. We never promise exact travel times because conditions on Bali roads are unpredictable.

How long the trip takes
Surya Bintang markets its route as approximately 12 km. Actual river distance can differ slightly between operators depending on the exact put-in and take-out points.
Time on the water is usually 2 to 2.5 hours. The full experience is longer because it includes registration, safety briefing, walking to the river (often via stairs), the rafting itself, showering, changing clothes, and lunch. Treat it as a half-day activity.

What is included
With Surya Bintang the package includes:
- Safety equipment (helmet and life jacket)
- Hot shower after rafting
- Operator insurance for ages 5–65
- Complimentary à la carte lunch
Towels and lockers are normally available on site. Bring your own change of clothes and a dry bag for phones and valuables. Transport from the hotel is extra.
Best season
Dry season (roughly April–October)
Water levels are generally more stable and predictable. This is the most popular period.
Wet season (roughly November–March)
The river can have higher water volume after rain. Some days the current becomes stronger and the water turns murkier. Operators may adjust or cancel trips for safety. The scenery is greener, but conditions are less consistent.
The final decision on whether a trip runs always belongs to the operator on the day, based on real-time river conditions.

How to compare operators
Instead of looking for a single “best” operator, compare them on these practical points:
- Actual route length and time spent on the water
- Sharing boat vs private boat options
- Maximum people per boat
- Quality of safety briefing and equipment
- Age, height, weight and health restrictions
- Whether insurance is included and for which ages
- Lunch quality, hot shower, towels and lockers
- Whether hotel transport is included
- Condition of the access path or stairs to the river
- Weather and cancellation policy
Ask these questions when you compare options. Clear answers matter more than marketing claims.
Rafting only
Rafting only is the simpler choice if you want a focused half-day on the river and prefer to keep the schedule light.
Combo packages (commonly rafting + ATV) suit travellers who want two activities in one day and are happy with an earlier start and a fuller itinerary. Combos cost more and take longer, so they only make sense if you genuinely want both experiences.
Choose based on your energy level and how packed the rest of your day is, not on the idea that a combo is automatically better.
How to book
Booking is done by sending a request via WhatsApp. There is no prepayment at the request stage.
When you message us, include:
- Preferred date
- Preferred time
- Number of people
- Hotel area
We check availability and confirm the meeting point, final price, payment method, and current river conditions before the booking is finalised. We recommend requesting at least one day in advance. Same-day requests are sometimes possible if space remains, but they are never guaranteed.
